"An organization like the Millay Colony, established at the home of the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, provides a great service. Artists, more than any other people, need time away in solitude to do their work..to reflect and allow the blank spaces to be filled from their depths with the images and stories of this time, which will be our collective voice to the children of our children's children."

Ellen Burstyn, former Trustee

The Millay Colony for the Arts provides a vital part of the artistic process—the time to work. Without time to fully dedicate themselves to their work, artists cannot entirely be artists, and many works would go unpainted, unpublished or unwritten. We provide that time to six artists each month, in an utterly peaceful and beautiful pastoral environment. Our budget is small and overhead is kept to a minimum while still allowing our residents to be well taken care of and provided all the amenities needed for a nourishing and profound work experience.

Supporting our general operations or sponsoring a resident for The Millay Colony provides an opportunity that can transform the course of an artist's work, well-being and career. It also supports the artistic community of our country. Today artists' colonies are among the very few resources nationwide that continue to support individual artists. These communities' sole dedication to the essential role of an artist's process, rather than product, make them pivotal to the role of creativity and imagination in American life.

We welcome general contributions or Sponsorships of individual artists.

Sponsoring An Artist: Sponsoring the Arts

There are several ways to sponsor a specific artist at the Colony. In each case, a gift is made to underwrite one residency at the Colony. It greatly enhances an artist's time at the Colony to be designated a Sponsored Fellow, and the financial support of our Endowed and Annual Fellowships is one of the pillars of our well-being.

** An Annual Fellowship Award of $4,500 provides an important investment that results in far-reaching artistic achievement. Annual Fellowship Awards provide for the entire package of one residency—one month of private room and studio space plus all meals and a range of amenities at the Millay Colony.

** A Scholarship Fellowship of $5,500 also provides travel costs and a stipend for an artist for whom the financial considerations of getting to/from our campus or covering monthly bills may prohibit their participation.

** An Endowed Fellowship is currently $90,000. The interest from this gift is used to underwrite an artist's residency in perpetuity. Currently the Colony has eighteen Endowed Fellowships.

Supporting Our Continued Operation

Approximately 50% of the Colony's annual budget must be raised through private sources. We rely on the support of foundations and individuals around the country in order to continue to provide a thriving haven for artists and the arts. At whatever level is possible, we very much hope that you will join us in offering artists the time and space in which to work. Further, we hope that you will become part of our community by attending our events, visiting the Colony and meeting the staff and residents for yourself. It is immediately evident, upon being here, how an exquisite pastoral setting, high quality workspace, and lots of quiet time nourish the work of the artists who honor us with their presence.

Please join us at whatever level is comfortable for you.
