Winter Shakers Program for Former Millay Colony Residents

 

Millay Colony officially closes its residency program at the end of November. At that time we are involved in a four-month process of juries, repairs to buildings as well as organizing administrative work. This allows us to be ready for the 2011 residency program.

Our Winter Shakers program is an invitation and exclusive opportunity for former Millay Colony residents to stay at the Colony during the winter months. Residents can either pay a minimum fee or exchange work for a room during the off-season months of December, January, February and March. This program takes its name from the rich history of people who joined Shaker communities for shelter during the hard winter months only to return to their "regular" lives when warmer weather arrived.

To apply, fill out the simple application form and mail it back to Millay Colony. We have a limit number of exchange residencies, so spots are filled on a first come basis. Ten hours of volunteer work is required for each week of stay at the Colony—we'll have a list of reasonably small tasks to be done, painting, fix-ups, cleaning, administrative work and so forth, whatever best suits your temperament. For those not on the exchange residency, the fee to stay is $250 per week. As is done during the normal season, a room and studio will be provided, along with bedding and towels. There is no chef available during Winter Shakers and the resident is responsible for their own food shopping and meal preparation.

Winter Shakers Program for Guest Writers/Artists

We are accepting guest artists, writers, and composers, who have not been residents at the Colony but need a retreat in order prepare for an upcoming exhibit, meet a publication deadline, or focus on new work. Acceptance and amount of time approved is at the discretion of the Colony administration.

To apply, fill out this application form and mail it back to The Millay Colony. We have a limited number of guest residencies, and spots are filled on a first come first served basis. For guest residents there is a weekly fee of $300 per week. Otherwise, the terms are the same as those for former resident Winter Shakers.

All of our common rooms and libraries as well as the Colony car are available.
