Santa Monica – Kat Smith’s first spec sale, Into the Land of Nod, was set in Belle Glade, Florida, where 10,000 Jamaicans are imported every year to cut sugar cane.  The script was picked up by Warner Brothers for producer Wendy Finerman (Forest Gump), with Robin Wright Penn attached to star.  More recently, Ms. Wright-Penn has served as Executive Producer on the project. Also at Warners, Kat wrote the American adaptation of Almodovar’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! for Mark Rosenberg and Paula Weinstein of Spring Creek Productions (Recount, Fabulous Baker Boys).  Other works-for-hire include a Jean Seberg biopic for Jodie Foster to produce/star; The Lady’s Transgression, based on the story of a 16th century Hungarian countess who was tried for the murder of 650 handmaidens in her court.  Rafaella DeLaurentis commissioned the script for Universal Pictures.  For Starz/Encore cable, Kat wrote a script based on the true story of a piano tuner in Evanston, Illinois who brought a ground-breaking lawsuit against the American gun industry after losing a son to gang violence, and xxx.com for Fox/FX (Rudy Langlais, Norman Stephens, producers; Jeremiah Chechik, director).
