THE PRACTICE OF PRESENCE: DRAWING ATTENTION WITH BARBARA BERNSTEIN

This workshop is devoted to encouraging concentration and awareness through the use of simple drawing exercises. Below is a video of Barbara speaking on her practice and her teaching methodology at UVA. She presented a modified version of this program in her two-day residency at Chatham High School.

Artist Shares Work, Techniques With Students
Originally published at Chatham HS website

Artist Barbara Bernstein visited CHS over a two-day period this May to work with our students during their art class. On her first day, Ms. Bernstein discussed her work, which includes public art projects such as visual enhancements for seven stations of the Virginia Transit System, as well as installations, drawing, and collage. On her second day, Bernstein led the students through three drawing exercises that emphasized concentration and paying attention.

As a recipient of the Mid Atlantic Fellowship Award, Bernstein is currently undertaking a residency at The Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz. She is presently a visual arts instructor at the University of Virginia and has taught art at both Yale University and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Bernstein’s visit to CHS was made possible through a collaboration between CHS art teacher Judith Harrigan and The Millay Colony, which has brought professional artists into Chatham art classes for the past five years.
